What we promise
- We don’t sell your data, and we don’t share it with advertisers or data brokers.
- Ankio shows no ads and doesn’t track you across other apps or websites.
- You can use Ankio without an account. Your cards and study history then stay on your phone.
- If you make an account, you can delete it and its synced copy from the app at any time.
This policy covers the Ankio app for iPhone and Android and this website. “We” means Ankio. Write to ankioapp@gmail.com with any question about your data.
What we collect and why
| Data | Whose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Usage events: a study session starts or ends, a card is rated, an answer is marked (counts only, never your words), an interview date is set, you sign in | Everyone who uses the app | To see which features people use and improve them |
| Crash reports and error details | Everyone who uses the app | To find and fix bugs |
| Device identifiers: an install ID the app creates, and the analytics provider’s app instance ID | Everyone who uses the app | To tell your devices apart for sync, and for analytics |
| Email address, user ID and, if you add it, a name (Sign in with Apple can share your name if you allow it) | Only if you make an account | To sign you in, reset your password and keep your data with your account |
| Your cards and decks, the images in them, your study history and settings | Only if you make an account and sync | To keep the same cards on every device you sign in on |
| Text you send to make cards (typed, from a file or read from a photo) and the cards made from it | Only when you use card generation | To write the cards you asked for |
The analytics provider may work out an approximate region, such as your country, from your IP address. We don’t collect your precise location.
What we don’t collect
- Voice recordings. If you answer out loud, your phone’s speech recognition turns your voice into text. Ankio receives only the text, keeps it while you study that card, and never stores or uploads it.
- Photos of your notes. If you take one to make cards, the text is read on your phone and the photo isn’t uploaded.
- Contacts, precise location, health or financial data, browsing history or purchases.
The app asks for the microphone, speech recognition, camera or photos only when you first use the feature that needs it. You can turn each one off in your phone’s settings.
Reminders are set on your phone. No message about them reaches us.
Who processes your data
- Our servers in Germany (EU) hold your account, your synced data and the text you send to make cards.
- Our analytics and crash reporting provider (Google) receives usage events, crash reports, error details and device identifiers. It processes them for us and may do so outside the EU.
- The service that writes cards from text. When you’re signed in, our server sends it the text you chose and gets the cards back. Without an account, you can enter your own key for such a service. Your text then goes from your phone straight to the service you picked, under its terms, and we don’t receive it.
- Apple or Google sign-in, if you choose them, confirm who you are. They give us your email address, and your name if you allow it.
- Our email provider (Google) handles the messages you send to ankioapp@gmail.com.
When data leaves the EU, it is protected by the safeguards the law requires, such as standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Account, synced data, text sent to make cards and the cards made from it | Until you delete your account |
| Server logs | 30 days |
| Analytics | Up to 14 months |
| Crash reports | Up to 90 days |
| Data on your phone | Until you delete it or remove the app |
| Emails to us | As long as we need to answer you and keep a record of the request |
Legal bases
Where the GDPR or a similar law applies, we use your account, synced data and the text you send to make cards to run the features you asked for. We use analytics and crash reports because we have a legitimate interest in keeping the app working and improving it. Microphone, speech recognition, camera and photo access rely on the permission you give on your phone.
Your rights
You can ask us to show you the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or send you a copy. You can also object to how we use it, ask us to limit it, and withdraw a permission at any time. To do any of this, email ankioapp@gmail.com from the address on your account. We answer within 30 days.
If you live in the EU or the UK, you can also complain to your data protection authority. If you live in California, you have the same rights to know and delete. We don’t sell or share personal information as that law defines it.
To delete your account, see Delete your Ankio account.
Security
Data travels between the app and our servers over encrypted connections (HTTPS).
Children
Ankio is not meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their data. If you think a child has given us data, email us and we’ll delete it.
Changes
When this policy changes, we update this page and the date at the top.
